I do not believe one system is better than the other, it is all a matter of preference and personal taste. Level based games are about the PC’s growing in power via combat and a lot of rules regarding combat, whereas a skill based game tends to focus on combat least of all in favor of investigation and roleplay. So not only do you need to decide between Fantasy in Space (Star Wars) or Gritty Sci-Fi (The Expanse), but you also need to decide between a level based game (Pathfinder, D&D, Starfinder) or a skill based game (Call of Cthulhu, Traveller). After we finished the campaign, I decided I wanted to run more “grounded in reality” games, which led me to Call of Cthulhu and Traveller. We just didn’t prefer the mechanical portion of the system. But the setting was amazing, the lore was intriguing, and we loved that aspect of it. One of my players compared Starfinder to a Pathfinder 1.5, and it just didn’t work for my group. If you are familiar with Pathfinder 1e and 2e, Starfinder felt like a weird combo of the two. We enjoyed the setting of Starfinder, but struggled a bit with the system. My group has played Pathfinder 1e/2e, and Call of Cthulhu. I have run a year-long Dead Suns Adventure Path campaign from Starfinder. I have read Traveller, but have not played it. I am sorry to mirror all the other comments here, but it really does come down to two preferences: Fantasy Sci-Fi vs Gritty Realism Sci-Fi, Level based system vs skill based system.
